Creativity & Innovation

28 Sep

So this week’s blog is going to be about how to be more creative. Since this is a music blog I’m going to tell you a few things how to get more creative ideas in music and being a more creative person all around. If you don’t know already, I’m a sophomore in college and one of the classes I’m taking is called creativity and innovation. I can honestly say this is the best class I’ve ever taking in my life. We had a guest speaker by the name of Cathy Anderson’s and she is VERY inspirational to being trying to have more creative ideas. She was very inspirational and she had a lot of ways I’ve never thought about to be more creative. I’m going to list a few methods she taught us and I will explain each in a few sentences.

  1. The Creative notebook
    1. Mrs. Anderson said buy a notebook, and for 60 days fill up a page a day. This page can consist of anything; drawings, lyrics, music ideas, quotes, anything that comes to your mind. After the 60 days is up go back through your notebook and you will see your ideas start to come together.
  1. Rambling
    1. What is a ramble? A ramble is going somewhere new once a week. They key is to make yourself uncomfortable. Everybody is confortable doing the same thing they’re use to doing. Going to do something new every week can increase your networks and to help you be more creative because you’re surrounding yourself with new people with new ideas.
  1. How to create Flow
    1. We have all had those moments where were doing something that feels like a few minutes but really hours have passed. That’s called the euphoric flow. To put this in a music point of view, lets say you write music. If you write at the same time everyday, at the same place, everyday, you will create flow. It will seem like 30minutes has passed, but really 3 hours passed. You will be a more efficient worker when you’re able to create flow.

I do plan on buying a notebook and trying the 60days creative challenge she taught us. I had to come home to DJ for the weekend so I wasn’t able to try anything new in Charlotte like I wanted to. But the one thing that I did do new for the first time was DJ an elementary school dance. I’m use to Djing college events, parties, and sometimes receptions. Also the music that I’m use to playing is rap, RnB, and a little bit of pop music. I had to step out of my comfort zone and appeal to kids in the 5th grade and below. Before I arrived, I was a little nervous because I never had to DJ at an elementary school before, let alone little kids. After I set up in their cafeteria, all the little kids ran in starring at the stage I was on, seeing what song I was going to play first. The first and last song always determines if a party will be successful or not. I went through my playlist and ironically I decided to start with Black Eye Peas “Lets get it started.” They went crazy, running around, dancing, having the most fun they probably had all week. As time past I was noticing it wasn’t as hard as I thought it would be. I noticed the only thing kids want to hear is dancing music or music they can run around to. It went a lot better than I thought. And to top it off, the last song I played was “Cupid shuffle” by Cupid. All of the kids, teachers, and principals all came together to do this dance. It was cute seeing little kids all doing the same line dance together. After the dance the teachers and students came to me and said that I did a good job and that they had fun. I had more fun than I thought I was going to have and for it being my first time, everything went good.  Have you tried anything new lately? If so, what was it and did you like it?

Music News!

15 Sep

Welcome back to my music blog! I’m in the process of trying to do at least two blogs a week but with me being in school still, it can be hard. But I can guarantee at least once a week. So this week I’m mainly going to be talking about music news, primarily new music and one big story. If you were on twitter, or on any music website you know ALOT happened this past week.

First, lets start with a few albums/songs that came out. The Weeknds sophomore album, “Kiss Land” came out last week. I’m a big Weeknd fan so I had to get it. From what I’ve heard so far its pretty good. Of course it’s not good as House of Balloons, but I’ll still give it a 4 out of 5 stars. 2 Chainzs sophomore album, “B.O.A.T.S” also came out. In my opinion 2 Chainz has fell off as an artist. His album, “Based on a Tru Story” was a decent album, but I can’t get into his new music anymore. He doesn’t talk about anything new and his style needs to switch up. I’ve been listening to Big Seans new album for almost a month straight, so I have only listened to a few good new songs.

Songs I recommend:

I Do it- 2 Chainz (Ft. Drake, & Lil Wayne)

Tis The Season- Audio Push

I Wanna Be With You- Nicki Minaj, Future & Rick Ross

You Song- Lil Wayne (Ft. Chance The Rapper)

GTA V- A$AP Rocky

Now to music news, I think the most popular story out right is about the infamous Gucci Mane. Last week after being dropped from Atlantic Records, he went on a twitter rant exposing some of your favorite artist such as Nicki Minaj, Waka Flocka, French Montana, Rocko, Monica,Keyshia Cole ,Fantasia, Ciara, Iggy, Kelly Rowland, AND many more artist. Some people say its true; others think he’s lying. At the end of his rant he claimed that somebody hacked his twitter. BUT right after his rant he was promoting a new album that he was planning to drop the next day. Was this just a publicity stunt? Or was his twitter really hacked? Who knows, but I do know that he is losing his mind. Its bad enough he was talking about artist he was once cool with, but two days after there was a video of him about to fight an RnB artist at Lenox mall in Atlanta. Really Gucci?  And to make it even worse, that very next day he was arrested for disorderly conduct, possession of marijuana and for carrying a gun. Gucci Mane is no stranger to jail but I think he’s getting out of control now. Jail isn’t going to help him. He needs professional help. Whether it’s from a doctor or a mental hospital, his life is about to get even worse.

It’s sad to see someone who was so respected by everybody, now looked down on. That’s it for this blog, the question I want to leave you all with this time is how do you feel about the whole Gucci mane situation? Does he really belong in jail? Or does he need professional help? Like last time if you have any comments please leave them below, and recommend any song that you want.

Welcome to my music Blog!

3 Sep

Welcome to my first official blog! Let me first start by introducing who I am. My name is Chris Tolbert and I’m from Greenville, SC. I was born in Detroit, MI and have lived in 6 different cities in the north, south, and eastern part of the US. I’m a current sophomore at Queens University of Charlotte and plan on majoring in Communication Mass Media Studies and going to minor in either marketing or philosophy. Most of my life I’ve been trying to figure out what I’m great at. I have never failed a grade but no matter how hard I study I have always been an average student in school. As far as sports goes I can honestly say I’m an all around athlete. Since I was six I have at least played two sports a year until I reached High School where I focused my attention on basketball. But even in sports I was never great, I was always good, but not great. It wasn’t until 10/29/2011 that made me realize what I was passionate about, and what I could possibly be great at.

I have been Djing since I was in middle school but it was mainly just helping my uncle carrying the equipment to the event we were attending. My uncle use to DJ in college so he would always give me the latest CDs and songs that would come out. Because of him I never bought CDs. I think the first two CDs I ever bought were Eminem’s “The Eminen show” and B2Ks, “B2K.” And this was in 2002 when I was in second grade.  To make a long story short when Kanye West album “Graduation” came out I became a huge fan of his. Everything he talked about I could relate to. I started listening to his old albums and even bought his album “My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy” which came out in 2010. (It came out on my birthday so I had to buy it)

The following year Kanye and Jay Z were working on their first duo album called “Watch the Throne.” (Personally the greatest collaboration I’ve ever heard) Before the album came out in August it was a rumor that they were going on tour together. I was going crazy. Kanye west and Jay Z in the same building? At the same time? I had to find out if they were really going on tour or not. After searching a few website, I found out yes it was true, I also found their tour schedule. Of course they weren’t coming to South Carolina, we don’t have a big enough market for them. But they were going to be performing in Atlanta on 10/29/2011. Atlanta is only two hours away from where I was from so it was a way for me to go.

I told my uncle about the tour and how this was a once in a lifetime concert. He agreed to take a few friends and me and all three of us agreed that this was the best concert we have ever been to. Besides the fact that Kanye West and Jay Z our role models, were right in front of our face, it was a lot deeper than that to me. I loved every single thing about that concert. How it was set up, the order they performed each song, the venue they chose to preform in, everything! A few things stuck out to me the most though. The production was crazy, instead of performing the song how it would sound on their album; they had a live band that made the song sound even better because it was a live performance. And at the end of the concert Kanye had told the DJ to play a random song by him and he performed that too.

I know I’m sounding excited like a little kid that found where his mom was hiding the cookie jar but that’s how exciting the show was, and that’s how excited I was.  Ever since that night I knew I wanted to something in the music field and my passion for music has grown everyday since. I’ve learned how to produce and engineer, I’ve became a better DJ, I know how to read crowds, and I comprehend rap and Hip Hop music which is the number one controversial music genre.  Right now I can’t say that I’m a great producer or great DJ, but I can say I’m above average. Music is my passion so I’m going to get better and better as time goes on.  And soon Ill be able to say I am the best producer/DJ of my generation.

This blog will consist of a lot of different topics each week. I will be talking about music news, newest upcoming artist, how to read crowds, lyrics of the week, songs of the weeks, how to produce, and many other music related topics. Just to clear up any questions, yes I will mainly be talking about rap and hip hop but I am versatile, I love all types of music. If there’s a song you really like that’s not a rap song please leave it in the comments below. I will listen to it and if I like it ill talk about it in my next blog. Also when I do a song or lyrics of the week they will change also. Some will be happy joyful songs/lyrics, and others will be more serious or they could be funny. If you don’t understand the lyrics or songs just leave a comment and Ill explain it in my next post. Thank you all for following my blog, if you know anybody who loves music just as much as I do tell them to follow also! Before I finish my blogs ill always end by asking you all a question. Question one, who’s your favorite artist and why?
